SO HOW DO YOU ACTUALLY WORRY LESS?

Great question! And because I was, once upon a time, a bit of a worry wart, I have searched long and hard for an answer.

So here it is – well at least something that puts my own mind at ease.

If you have a child with special needs like I do, then you will be well acquainted with worry I’m sure.

Besides,worrying isn’t fun.

To the contrary, it sucks!

But here is how I have managed to worry less every day:

I speak all the time about the importance of worrying less but the truth is it’s easier said than done.

Besides, sometimes my own mind wanders off down dark paths, towards places it shouldn’t and I find myself feeling panicked and trapped in a web full of ugly worst-case scenarios.

So why is worrying so bad? Well there are so many reasons.

For starters, worrying about something doesn’t ever change the outcome.

It doesn’t stop the bad things from happening but it does stop you from enjoying the good.

Worrying also often creates problems that weren’t even there in the first place.

Fact: the vast majority of things we worry about DON’T EVEN HAPPEN.

Worrying is such a waste of time because it doesn’t change anything.

Besides, all it does is steal your joy. It doesn’t empty tomorrow of your troubles, instead it empties today of your strength. it’s like praying for something you don’t even want.

And is that how you want to be spending your precious time?

So heed the words of Shantideva, an eighth-century Indian Buddhist monk (gosh I love this!):

If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying?
If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?

Or how about the wise Dalai Lama:

Next, if a problem is fixable, if a situation is such that you can do something about it,
Then there is no need to worry.
If it’s not fixable, then there is no help in worrying,
There is no benefit in worrying whatsoever.
You can’t change yesterday but you can definitely ruin today by worrying about tomorrow.

And so, please bear this advice in mind every time a nugget of worry works its way inside your mind.
